Reliability

As we transition to renewable energy and demand for electricity increases, we’re preparing our grid and working to ensure that service stays reliable. This includes strengthening our system through new equipment that can stand up to our changing weather, an increased investment in tree trimming, and using new technology that helps prevent outages and streamlines how we work.

STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES:

EDUCATION, EMPOWERMENT, AND EXPERIENCE

We are proud to empower students to follow their dreams. Providing opportunities to learn and grow is essential for creating a workforce that helps build the strong, healthy, and successful communities of tomorrow.

We offer hands-on work experience to post-secondary students, which includes summer placements plus co-op and internship opportunities.

We also have additional opportunities and paths for students in our formal Apprenticeship Programs for engineers in training, powerline technicians, and other skilled labour.

The EIT program is our three-year rotational program designed to develop our Engineers in Training technical and leadership skills by exposing them to all areas across our business. At the end of the program, you will have fulfilled 36 months of work experience requirements toward receiving your Professional Engineer (P. Eng) designation.

The Labour Pool is a union-maintained list of IBEW Local 1928 members who work in casual and term positions, in power production (thermal and hydro locations), and energy delivery (transmission and distribution). The Labour Pool consists of a formal rotated list of qualified trade and non-trade members throughout the province in roles such as electricians, machinists, millwrights, chemical technicians, utility/labourers, and more.

Graduates of a Utility Line Worker program are able to apply as apprentices. As an apprentice, you will complete the theory and practical aspects of the trade, as well as a minimum of 8,000 hours in the apprenticeship program. After you have received your Powerline Technician Red Seal, you are then eligible to apply for regular full-time powerline technician roles.

One of our major commitments to developing our community is through our scholarship programs. We offer scholarships to students under five categories: African Nova Scotian Bursary, Emerging Leader, Mi’kmaq Bursary, Nova Scotia Power Family, and Women in Trades, Engineering, and Technology.
